Forensic Science Education
CIFS educates on forensic science issues through amicus briefs, attorney training, consultations, and social media. Education in various forms is key to spreading the word about bad forensic science. With knowledge and insight, we all can work toward necessary changes in the forensic science landscape.
Amicus Briefs
Amicus briefs are a position by an independent third party in a case that offers additional context and research on a particular issue to educate the courts. We file amicus briefs (friend of the court briefs) in courts across the country to raise issues surrounding bad forensic science.
We partner with law firms and innocence organizations and have contributed or submitted nearly 40 amicus briefs since 2019. We cover a range of topics in these cases, including:
shaken baby syndrome
DNA
firearm analysis
child death
novel science
digital forensics
expert testimony
pathology errors

Attorney Training
We conduct training sessions for attorneys on forensic science topics so they approach these cases with confidence and knowledge. CIFS also works with the State Bar of Wisconsin to host the Forensic Justice Institute each January, where participants can receive continuing legal education credits. CIFS conducts trainings at conferences, public defender offices, and universities.

Social Media
CIFS uses social media to reach a broader audience to raise awareness about bad science in the legal system. Billions of people use social media and by meeting them where they are with educational content, we hope to change the common misconception that forensic science is infallible. Most forensic science techniques were created by law enforcement with little or no scientific foundation. We share relevant news, highlight injustice, and create educational campaigns so users and potential jurors can see the risks. The more people who know about the issues surrounding bad forensic science, the more change we can enact together.
