We Occasionally Represent Defendants in Cases Involving Bad Forensic Science

We occasionally directly represent clients who are accused of a crime or have been wrongfully convicted based on faulty or misleading forensic science. To do so, we partner with organizations in the jurisdiction in which the individual has been charged or convicted.

We have previously worked with:

Amanda Brumfield

In Amanda’s case, prosecutors agreed to free her in exchange for relinquishing her opportunity for an evidentiary hearing. She had served 9 of her 20 year sentence for a crime that never occurred. Though she knew she was innocent, she chose the best decision for her and her family: accepting the deal to ensure her freedom rather than counting on the system that had so thoroughly failed her before. Alan Butts

In December, 2022, our client Alan Butts was released from Ohio prison on bond pending a new trial after spending 19 years in prison for a crime that never occurred. In February, 2024, Alan Butts was fully exonerated. We represented Alan with the Ohio Innocence Project.

Stephanie Spurgeon

Stephanie was granted a new trial and released after spending 8 years in prison. The prosecution offered Stephanie a plea deal which would guarantee her freedom and end her case. Stephanie, too, has always maintained her innocence and chose to take an Alford Plea and move forward with her life. In both cases we partnered with the Innocence Project of Florida.

Jessica Logan

One of our current clients is Jessica Logan. Her story was covered in depth in an award-winning piece by Brett Murphy at ProPublica. Jessica was convicted in Illinois based on 911 call analysis after her infant son suddenly passed away. We are representing her with the Exoneration Project in her post-conviction proceedings.
